In 2005 the State of Iowa created and added a new waiver service to its many waiver options. The Child Mental Health Waiver was created to offer intensive service and support to children who have been diagnosed with a serious emotional disturbance. The children who qualify for this waiver are those who are at risk for placement outside of the home in a PMIC (Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children) or other institution and the average community supports and counseling are no longer effective. The objective of the waiver is to extend additional supports and treatment to keep the child in the home and prevent or reduce the out of home placements and hospitalizations to keep the child in a more effective theraputic environment. The State of Iowa has a limit on the number of openings for this waiver and it is possible to be placed on a waiting list until an opportunity opens. An application must be completed and turned in to be considered for this waiver as well as an assessment by an LPHA (Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts) confirming the diagnosis and need for services. More information on this service can be found on the Iowa DHS website.
